"Hey, this is Matthew! If you're getting this I probably left my phone somewhere weird, but you can leave a message and I'll call you back later, promise!"
[ See, Matty, this is why he texted you. He knew you'd make him smile ]
it was pretty cool. I'll try to snap you a pic. Me neither until tonight. We'll have to venture out some, ok? I want to show you around so you can see blue ladies.
yeah do it! i heard about this one place called the time district that sounds cool we should check it out or more stuff in r1 ive barely seen any of it
yes!! i heard about it from this lady on the tab she said theres all kinds of stuff there from like different times and places i bet theyve got real neat food
hello, matthew. it's been a little while since i've seen you after this whole demon business. just wanted to check in and make sure you were still doing okay! when's the next time we're going for space tea?
a week later (text)
hi, matthew. it's kurt. again. i mean, obviously, haha. the tab tells you on the screen and such. not sure why i insist on ah, nevermind.
i haven't done anything to upset you, have i? if so, please, don't be afraid to tell me. i'd much rather know, that way i can try and fix what i messed up.
sorry, i didn't mean for this to become a ramble. i only want
[And the message abruptly ends there.]
the day matthew wakes (but before he actually does) (voice)
[The beginning of the message is filled with silence, broken only by the occasional shuffling noise or a breathy huff. Finally, Kurt seems to find his voice and when he speaks, he sounds exhausted.]
The network continues to register your existence here on Thisavrou, but I wonder if it's a trick. It wouldn't be the first time this sort of thing has happened ... [Another sigh, his voice lowering an octave as he continues to talk.] Either way, whatever is going on or wherever you might be, I hope that you're ... okay. I hope that you'll receive these messages in good health, that you'll find a way to contact me soon. I'm not— not entirely sure why I'm still talking. It's been a while since I've slept decently.
The air lately feels like it's been charged with electricity and I know it isn't just because of the storm.
[He gets quiet once more, as if contemplating what else he wants to say, even though he's almost positive that he won't get an answer. Still, Nightcrawler clears his throat, words barely a whisper:] Please, if you get any of these, let me know that you're all right.
I ... I mi— [again, the disconnection of the feed is sudden, but before the TAB goes completely quiet, there's the faint sound of footsteps and something crashing, then an almost too eerie silence that follows. Eventually, his voicemail ends itself with no explanation.]
[ When Matthew first wakes up, he has more on his mind than checking his phone. Daisy seems shocked when she finds him in the bathroom brushing his teeth, and he doesn't understand why until she tries to explain.
He's been unconscious for weeks. Ronan and Declan haven't been seen in that time. Their TABs aren't connecting. Most likely... they're gone.
The news opens up a hollow pit inside of him. Even with Daisy taking care of him, he's never been so alone as he is now, without his brothers. When their dad died and their mother stopped talking to them, and Ronan left to live with Gansey, Matthew still had Declan. When Declan moved to D.C. by himself, Ronan found a way to bring their mom back, and he and Matthew started spending time together in Cabewater and at the Barns. Even when Matthew got teleported--or whatever--to another planet, Ronan was already here waiting for him. Now there's no one, and he's lost. Why was he asleep? Why did they leave him? (Don't be stupid, he tells himself. They would never leave on purpose.) The bigger question is: how will he ever find them again?
And why did he fall asleep? And will the demon come back? And what is he supposed to do now? He doesn't know if he can make it without them.
Eventually Matthew gets around to checking his own TAB, feeling a sting of guilt when he sees how old Kurt's first message is. He never meant to ignore his friend. When the end of the voicemail plays out, he immediately punches the buttons to call Kurt back, pressing the TAB to his ear. ]
Hey... Kurt?
[ He sounds pretty tired as well, but earnest as always. ]
[At first, the TABs incessant jingling doesn't rouse him, but when it continues for more than a few seconds, he finally decides to peek up and see who it is.
Matthew.
In an instant, little Blue reaches for the device and brings it to his face, unaware that his floundering about has brought him to the edge of the bed.] Matthew? [he manages, followed shortly by a yelp as he tumbles out of his bed.
Everything's fine, though, really! He just-- needs a moment to untangle himself from his blanket before he speaks again, somewhat breathlessly this time,] H—Hi, Matthew. Sorry, I got— [huff] got stuck in my comforter trying to answer my TAB.
[Kurt takes note of the tone of the other boy's voice, but makes no mention of it for now. He's pretty sure his own exhaustion shows through with how his words had broken.] Where are you? Is everything all right?
