"Hey, this is Matthew! If you're getting this I probably left my phone somewhere weird, but you can leave a message and I'll call you back later, promise!"
[ When Matthew first wakes up, he has more on his mind than checking his phone. Daisy seems shocked when she finds him in the bathroom brushing his teeth, and he doesn't understand why until she tries to explain.
He's been unconscious for weeks. Ronan and Declan haven't been seen in that time. Their TABs aren't connecting. Most likely... they're gone.
The news opens up a hollow pit inside of him. Even with Daisy taking care of him, he's never been so alone as he is now, without his brothers. When their dad died and their mother stopped talking to them, and Ronan left to live with Gansey, Matthew still had Declan. When Declan moved to D.C. by himself, Ronan found a way to bring their mom back, and he and Matthew started spending time together in Cabewater and at the Barns. Even when Matthew got teleported--or whatever--to another planet, Ronan was already here waiting for him. Now there's no one, and he's lost. Why was he asleep? Why did they leave him? (Don't be stupid, he tells himself. They would never leave on purpose.) The bigger question is: how will he ever find them again?
And why did he fall asleep? And will the demon come back? And what is he supposed to do now? He doesn't know if he can make it without them.
Eventually Matthew gets around to checking his own TAB, feeling a sting of guilt when he sees how old Kurt's first message is. He never meant to ignore his friend. When the end of the voicemail plays out, he immediately punches the buttons to call Kurt back, pressing the TAB to his ear. ]
Hey... Kurt?
[ He sounds pretty tired as well, but earnest as always. ]
[At first, the TABs incessant jingling doesn't rouse him, but when it continues for more than a few seconds, he finally decides to peek up and see who it is.
Matthew.
In an instant, little Blue reaches for the device and brings it to his face, unaware that his floundering about has brought him to the edge of the bed.] Matthew? [he manages, followed shortly by a yelp as he tumbles out of his bed.
Everything's fine, though, really! He just-- needs a moment to untangle himself from his blanket before he speaks again, somewhat breathlessly this time,] H—Hi, Matthew. Sorry, I got— [huff] got stuck in my comforter trying to answer my TAB.
[Kurt takes note of the tone of the other boy's voice, but makes no mention of it for now. He's pretty sure his own exhaustion shows through with how his words had broken.] Where are you? Is everything all right?
