[ He knows he should have told him personally, but he doesn't want to have to keep this knowledge inside of his chest when he's not sure what time Matthew'll be back. ]
[ The response is delayed, both because Matthew is trying not to get caught with his phone and because he has to read the texts three times to make sure they're real. ]
[ Meaning he's just got home and Adam has to break the news for him. He's fooling himself with thinking things are going to be all right. ] I'll keep an eye on him until you can get back.
Okay, [ Matthew says again, quickly, but he's worried. Bad feelings do not have any place inside him but they are there anyway, and he doesn't think about when Niall died anymore but he is anyway. ]
I'm going to ask them now. [ He almost hangs up and then-- ]
Wait, Adam--
Ronan and Noah both came back. Gansey might, too.
[ Maybe, maybe not. But Matthew says it anyway, and it has nothing to do with Ronan, for a second. Adam, he thinks, must be upset, too. ]
[ He does know. Ronan came back. Noah came back. But they didn't remember and that's more terrifying than anything else. At least Ronan spent months avoiding Adam before. Gansey has been by his side since day one here and somehow it terrifies him more that he might come back and not remember, than not coming back at all does. ]
[ There's silence from Matthew's end as the blatant lie settles between them, and a couple things occur to him: 1) maybe Adam doesn't know that Matthew's power works over the phone, and 2) Adam is definitely not okay.
Pointing out either of those things would, Matthew thinks, probably make this worse. ]
It's like the number one rule of the universe. But the sigh he lets out is relieved at least. ] Okay, good. I'll see you later. [ And then he's gone, off to deal with fighting with his boyfriend. ]

[ He swallows. ]
Should I ask?
[ Yes, probably, because it's a rare person who can say no to Matthew's earnest face. But he doesn't know that, he isn't thinking about that.
He's thinking, primarily, about his brother. ]
no subject
[ Because Matthew will at least be a calming influence on his brother. ] Just explain that it's a family emergency. They'll understand.
[ These things must happen constantly around imPorts. ]
